Activity 1. 4/23

After playing the game and reading the Bad News Information Sheet I learned a lot about fake news. While I was playing the game, I realized that each one of my posts was fake news. Even though all the posts were fake, many people believed it was read and also posted about the topic causing it to start spreading. The game showed me that literally anyone who wants to start and spread fake news can. Not only did other people believe the posts that I was creating, but there were also bots that were used to spread all the fake news. In the game, you earn badges for making good fake news. One badge is for impersonation. You get this badge for creating something news that is realistic or professional. The game taught me that it’s easy for anyone to do this in real life by using a name that sounds strong and real or by creating something that looks reliable. Another badge, which is emotion, is earned by using the emotions or people who are reading your posts. This taught me that it’s easier to make someone believe something if they have very strong feelings for or against the topic. Fake news is a problem. It is used to spread false information which can lead to other issues. One way the news is spread so fast is because of bots. The Bad News Information Sheet tells readers that approximately 15% of Twitter accounts are bots. One example of fake news spreading was the Pizzagate conspiracy theory around the time of the 2016 presidential election. This conspiracy theory said that a pizza joint in D.C. was running a child sex trafficing ring that had connections to Hillary Clinton. The spread of this conspiracy theory caused many people problems but one believer was determined to shut it down. His attempt to shut it down meant bringing a gun and knife into the resturaunt and shoot, when he found out there really was no child sex trafficing ring, and he ended up getting arrested. Some solutions include using the algorithm for sites like Google and Facebook. They can work on the algorithms to hopefully better filter through what is fake or unreliable news versus real and reliable news. Another solution is to fact check as much as possible.
